UW Information Technology is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW. Network Operations Management within UW-IT activates network/phone ports and installs switches, wireless access points, and routers for the networks supporting the UW, UW Medicine, Pacific Northwest Gigapop and the state K-20 Education Network; and provides 24x7x365 network monitoring and troubleshooting.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Network Engineer.
Network Engineer in the Network Operations Center support a state-of-the-art data and telecommunications network environment that is based on Internet protocols. This support is provided for the UW academic and medical center communities, the State of Washington K-20 Telecommunications Network, the Pacific-Northwest Gigapop, and Pacific Wave.
A network engineer in the NOC is responsible for
- In-depth trouble-shooting of network incidents
- Developing troubleshooting procedures and guides for use by other NOC staff
- Acting as incident commander for incidents affecting the operation of the campus, medical center, K20, and PNW Gigapop networks
- Handling with complex requests for network, numbering, and naming changes
- Supporting network upgrade and transition activities
This particular position will provide advanced troubleshooting and support to second shift (1300-2200 Monday through Friday)
Network engineers are expected to be exemplary in providing professional customer service over the phone and in email; they are expected to mentor other NOC staff in developing these skills. They must be capable of communicating complex technical concepts in a clear manner to non-technical users. They must be fully competent with trouble ticket applications, network monitoring systems, and troubleshooting techniques and tools.
This position requires in-depth knowledge of the OSI 7-layer model and experience with the following networktechnologies and protocols:
- Layer1: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, T1/T3, Optical transports such as DWDM
- Layer2: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VLANS, LACP, MLPPP
- Layer3: IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, Multicast
- Other: SNMP, VOIP, DHCP, DNS, Routing and number registries
Knowledge of SolarWinds Orion NPM would be very advantageous
Knowledge of the ITIL framework would also be useful
The NOC is staffed 24*7 including all holidays. Staff are expected to cover for holidays, vacations and other absences.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer engineering, computer science, or related field or experience
Minimum of four years’ experience network troubleshooting and incident management in a large and complex network environment
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ITIL foundations certificate, or equivalent experience
SolarWinds Orion network management system experience / Solarwinds Certified Professional (SCP)
Expertise in advanced networking technology including BGP, Multicast, MPLS, QoS, VRF, and VLAN

This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations.
The Network operations Center operates an on-call rotation to ensure coverage during unexpected events.
