Casualty Claims Supervisor

Highly profitable mutual insurance having been in business since 1800 has retained The Carlisle Group seeking to hire a talented Casualty Claims Supervisor. The role, reporting to the VP of Claims, is a critical component driving success in the casualty function. The ideal candidate for this role will bring significant depth in casualty claims handling, strong management experience, and a desire to work in a highly stable atmosphere.

This Casualty Claims Supervisor manages the casualty claims staff and support personnel in the claims department. This employee oversees the assignment, investigation and conclusion of casualty claims within a specified authority based on coverage and verifiable damages. Those in excess of the authority are reported the Vice President of Claims with recommendations. This employee will have management of the casualty staff including all personnel issues (including annual performance reviews) as well as technical issues (including monitoring workloads, conducting quality reviews etc.) for all the casualty staff and for evaluating the quality of work done by independent adjusting firms and defense counsel which may be used by the company. Currently this position will require the oversight of 6 members of the claims department of various levels. This position relies on experience, judgment and technical expertise to accomplish goals and should be able to make recommendations for improvements within the department. This position generally will work with autonomy up to a specified authority amount.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews accords and assigns losses to staff
  • Reviews reserves
  • Authorizes use of independent adjusters
  • Supervises all casualty claims handlers
  • Conducts quality control reviews of staff
  • Evaluates quality of work of independent adjusting firms and may participate in defense counsel reviews.
  • Develops/recommends procedures/policies to enhance/improve processing, investigation and settlement of claims
  • Reviews reinsurance correspondences and transactions
  • Conducts annual performance reviews on staff
  • Responsible for scheduling staff including approving of time off
  • May conduct behavioral correction/coaching meetings with employees
  • May conducts unit and company-wide training efforts
  • Participates in marketing seminars and agency appointments representing claims department
  • Screens new vendors/adjusters for use by our department
  • Interfaces with other departments on company-wide projects
  • Prepares state reporting for regulatory compliance
  • Conducts cost containment studies on pricing, and billing and expenses incurred
  • Supports customer service initiatives within unit
  • Prepares monthly reports noting unit and project status
  • Authorizes settlements up to $100,000.00
  • Handles inquiry calls/coverage question calls
  • Handles agent/insured complaint calls
  • Presents DOI/NJ Appeal claims
  • Responsible for unit wide projects
  • Acts as back up to Vice President as required
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by Vice President

Experience:

  • 7-10 years experience in a claims role is required.
  • Prior supervisory experience is helpful.
